Phil is an awesome advisor! I recommend dropping by during his "drop-in" meeting hours throughout the semester if they're convenient for you. He is pretty laid back and will help you suggest which English courses to complete as electives/requirements toward your English major/minor, as well as apply substitutions if applicable. Recommend highly!

Great advisor to have in the English Dept. Anybody majoring/minoring in this area who are unable to fulfill requirements prior to graduation, he is very lenient that can use any of the "Special Topics" Lit. courses as substitutions for any of the huge survey Lit. courses (except for those enrolled in the Secondary Ed program). Overall, great guy!

I have him for advising in the English Dept. and he is helpful with suggesting some English courses and which professors to take them with. If you're majoring/minoring in Creative Writing, Rhetoric Writing or English Lit. and are unable to fulfill one of the requirements you need to graduate under normal conditions, he can use substitutions.

Great class for someone who loves to read because you will be reading A LOT! There are quizzes every week on the assigned material so you can't really skip any story. Some questions can be tough but as long as you take a stab at the answer he'll usually give partial credit. Egan's clearly passionate and gives great insights during lecture.

Western Literature- quizzes every week. The questions are way too specific for such a large reading. You'll be fine if you like to read. Otherwise don't take this class. Also, he's SO passionate about literature, you have to be passionate or you won't be too fond of him. Always willing to sit down and talk. ALWAYS TAKES ATTENDANCE.

Worked with me to make sure I got everything I needed since I had to miss a few classes for an emergency. Textbook required. Lots of reading (duh, lit class). A few short papers, but he is a very fair grader. Tells great lit jokes. Very kind man. Learned a lot.

An amazing professor, really knows his stuff. I was unable to attend the first half of the summer semester as a returning student, he worked with me so I could attend his office hours instead. He will do anything for a student who tries hard. Hilarious if you like good literature jokes. He loves group discussions. Lots of papers and reading.

Philip Egan was probably the best professor I had this semester. He was always lively and loved to discuss the ideas given in the novels and short stories and always encouraged participation in class. Students on several occasions laughed out loud at some of his jokes and he was overall a blast. I would definitely take his class again if I could.

Egan thrives on students that participate. So in order to pass his class, you have to do your reading and do all the work. But other than that, he is a great teacher. He helps out when you need it and he is clear and entertaining in his lectures.

Absolutely LOVED Egan. His class wasn't particularly easy, you have to do the readings to do well, but I enjoyed the books. His lectures were interesting and funny. He's very helpful, too.

If he doesn't like you, your opinions will get shot down by him. Too much reading for a 5 question quiz, where the questions are very random. Tests are borderline bias, also depending on if he likes you or not. If your not an English major, you will hate this, if you are, you might be ok, but its a very biased class in my opinion.

Egan is one of my favorite teachers at WMU. Obviously it's going to be a lot of reading because these are literature classes! He is very animated and engaged in what you have to say.

Egan's class was very hard. The reading is so extensive. If you don't get every thing that a reading says then you won't do well on his quizzes. He gives quizzes before talking about what the reading was about, which, if you misread something or don't understand something, then you are screwed. Classes are very boring. Lecture only.

This is a tough class with A LOT of reading, but Prof. Egan makes it enjoyable! He is really passionate and knowledgable about the reading and always explains things that happen in the books in a way that we all can understand. Very good prof!
